Success in the business of growing any irrigated crop essentially comes down to a grower’s ability to convert every drop of precious water into as much commodity as possible. When a plant stresses, there is a yield penalty realised. A plant starts to stress not only when there is insufficient moisture in the soil, but also when the environmental conditions above the ground reach particular thresholds. Stress is avoided simply by providing water to the crop. In an environment suffering the effects of long-term drought and considerable ‘social license’ scrutiny around water access – this challenge has never been greater.

To help solve this significant issue, Goanna Ag has developed an integrated IoT solution in partnership with CSIRO and CRDC, that both measures the real-time stress of the plant, and for the first time, accurately predicts the future onset of stress. We can therefore determine the optimal irrigation timing and quantity or in other words ‘more crop per drop’ – optimising water use efficiency whilst maximising productivity and profitability.
